Chapter Six

“Now, Charlotte, follow,” Charlotte said for the tenth time as she collapsed over her steering wheel, weary from the day’s work.

She banged her head softly against the leather.

She jolted back and frowned when she realized it didn’t cut her skin.

Her old hatchback’s steering wheel had been so cracked, if you grabbed it too hard from the wrong angle, you could split an artery.

This one was deceptively smooth.

She wouldn’t exactly say that she liked her ancient replacement sedan, but at least it drove well.

Speaking of which, it was time to limp home after a day of….

“Could you call that work?” She grabbed the rear vision mirror down, angled it until she could see herself, and stared at her weary expression. Her cheeks were pale and puffy. That wasn’t to mention her eyes.

She’d been in a pretty good state after the hospital this morning. Now she was ready to limp into the bath and soak for hours. And if that didn’t soothe her nerves, how about just skipping through the rest of her life and heading straight to her final slumber?

She sighed into her hand.

It was dark already.

It was autumn, and dusk very rarely hung around long in Dove City. This place didn’t like transitions, see. It wanted everything to be black and white, on or off, magical or mundane. It was either the day, or it was the night. And if it was the night, it was time for simple souls like her to drag themselves back home and lock the doors – that was when the truly magical came out to play. She didn’t mean that Dove City was ravaged by magical crime anymore – like it had been back in the bad old seventies – but she knew her place. And a witch with as little power as her needed to go home after dark.

She started the engine, intending to drive home quickly, but then she moaned, shoved forward, and pressed her head against the steering wheel once more.

She could only think of the strange day she’d had. No, Theodore hadn’t become any lighter nor more friendly. Throughout the day, he had simply become more intense.

They’d quickly left the storage facility. He hadn’t been finished there, but he clearly hadn’t liked the idea that journalists were around. Or at least that was Charlotte’s impression. But trust her, regardless of the fact she did not have any evidence, her assumptions were quickly mounting around Theodore anyway.

And they all centered on the warning Riley had given her.

Even now, hours after the fact while Charlotte’s body was ready to collapse, she stiffened suddenly like someone had yanked her with rope.

Her hands fell from the steering wheel.

One slipped down her side and into her pocket. She pulled out Riley’s card.

Charlotte had no intention whatsoever of giving that interview.

It had been an excuse to escape, but it hadn’t worked.

But….

“It sure would be nice to know what the hell I’m dealing with. Every time I try to escape Theodore, he just finds some way to drag me back.
